Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is a procedure used to diagnose and treat problems in the upper gastrointestinal tract. A small flexible endoscope (tiny camera) is introduced through the mouth or nose and advanced through the pharynx, esophagus, stomach, and duodenum.

EGD is used for diagnostic procedures; therapeutic procedures such as endoscopic surgery or laser therapy; or for removing tissue samples for biopsy, removing foreign objects, or stopping bleeding.
