Dr. O’Rourke is amazing. I am a cancer survivor since 2001. I had surgery with him on January 29, 2014. Because of him I feel better than I’ve felt in a long time. Years ago I had a trams flap reconstructive surgery that went horribly wrong. I’ve had surgery after surgery after surgery with problems from that original surgery. This last time I had an infection in the area with some fluid accumulation and I could not stand the pain anymore. I had the fluid drained and later I found I had two more abscesses in the same area. I was terrified because I had been through so much already. So I wondered what do I do…Do I go to Albuquerque? I went to my regular doctor, Dr. White, who suggested I go see Dr. O’Rourke.
When I met Dr. O’Rourke, his personality - I just appreciated it because I was terrified. He read my chart and he understood what I had been through which was a lot. I told him that I was terrified and that I was probably going to go to Albuquerque to see who could do the surgery for me and hopefully it’s once and for all. I asked many questions and he did not hesitate to answer, and he sold me on it.
This doctor told me he had been doing this surgery for over 30 years. And that I could go to Albuquerque, or, wherever I wanted. But he guaranteed me no one could do what he did. After I talked to him I wasn’t scared anymore, I was just thankful that I wasn’t scared anymore. So I said well I’m going to stay in Taos and have it done. My daughter, Alicia, is a nurse. She took time from her work in Albuquerque to stay and take care of me.
I went to my appointment and everyone in the OR was wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, they made sure I was well taken care of and had everything I needed. The guy who does anesthesia was also very kind. He took his time and was very caring. I came out and everything was fine. We came home; I did not stay in the hospital.
A week later we went back, and he removed the drain. Dr. O’Rourke has an incredible sense of humor. He said, “how are you doing you look good.” And I said, “Well, I was terrified when I came in here.” He said, “Well that makes two of us.” “Excuse me” I said. Then he said, “Well you were terrified when you came to talk to me, but when I opened you up I was terrified by what I saw in there.”
But he was able to drain the fluid that was there. He had to do some piercing, but he then took a scope through there. I had tons and tons of scare tissue. By laser he took a bunch of it out and to me that was so amazing that he was able to do something like that! And I was so excited that I was feeling so good. For years I’ve been walking holding my belly because there is not any muscle to hold me up. Now I can sit up and stand up straight.
All the other incisions I had had I was opened up from one hip to the other and I had to stay in bed for three months to heal from the inside out and about a year or two later I had more infection in the area.
Taos is blessed by having Dr. O’Rourke here. He is amazing, caring, compassionate. He has a sense of humor that I can’t explain but it is awesome. He cares, he really cares. Like I say Taos hospital - Holy Cross - it’s a blessing to have him here. I can’t praise him enough, because I haven’t felt this good in a long time.
It’s nice to stand up straight. Dr. O’Rourke is amazing. Everyone says you look so good. I’m telling everyone it’s this doctor who did it, and he did it by laser, otherwise I’d probably be in bed still.
I didn’t expect to have such a good experience. But know I know there are good Doctors here in Taos. Dr. O’Rourke is a real good doctor, who takes care of his patients.

He (Dr. Aiden O'Rourke) and the entire staffs from both Taos Surgical Specialties and Holy Cross Hospital went way beyond what I had ever experienced before to assure me that everything would be done to perfection and I would receive the finest of care. I have never before received such personal care and professional consideration. You all have my most profound thanks.
